And the Winners Are…

2009 Seattle Lesbian & Gay Film Festival Juried Awards

BEST FEATURE FILM: The Man Who Loved Yngve
Directed by Stian Kristiansen
An unexpectedly delightful film, THE MAN WHO LOVED YNGVE tells a compelling and beautifully cinematic coming-of-age story which captures the cynicism and innocence of self-discovery. Amazing performances and solid storytelling allow Stian Kristiansen to direct a memorable and fully engaging film.

FEATURE FILM HONORABLE MENTION:  I Can’t Think Straight
Directed by Shamim Sarif
As a genre, I CAN’T THINK STRAIGHT, is film that needs to be recognized for its complex story and politics. Filmmaker Shamim Sarif is a remarkable storyteller that will continue to push the boundaries of world and social issues.

BEST DOCUMENTARY FILM: Edie & Thea: A Very Long Engagement
Directed by Gréta Olafsdóttir and Susan Muska
A timeless and timely love story that transcends being gay and is truly universal. This deeply intimate portrait of two charming, intelligent women and their life together engages the audience to consider the nature of love, commitment, and the definition of marriage. A movie that touched our hearts and brought the entire audience to tears.

BEST SHORT FILM: Diana
Directed by Aleem Khan
For a powerful and expressive portrayal of alienation based on complex identity. This film uniquely tackles all of the multiple challenges—cultural identity, gender identity, sexual orientation, and family relationships—in a single character.

SHORT FILM HONOURABLE MENTION: Claiming the Title
Directed by Jonathan Joiner and Robert H. Martin
For shedding light on an important part of our combined historical struggle against blatant discrimination. For reminding us that progress is not about winning or losing but about taking courageous, continual, incremental steps.

MOST INNOVATIVE SHORT: The Apple
Directed by Emilie Jouvet
For transcending our expectations of queer cinema. THE APPLE was a visual feast that showed us the sensuality of the forbidden.

Tickets are still available for tonight’s program: A Touch of Mink with Peaches Christ and Mink Stole in person at The Egyptian Theatre. Only $10. Tickets are no longer available online—only at the door and will be for sale all day at the Egyptian Theatre box office starting at noon.

Ms. Stole joins Peaches Christ onstage to discuss her notorious film career, answer your questions, and do a post-show fan meet-and-greet. Peaches kindly requests that audience members dress up for the Mink Stole Look-Alike Contest!-or at least wear your clothes backwards.
Followed by a screening of DESPERATE LIVING, a “monstrous fairy tale” from John Waters about a middle-class murderess (Mink Stole) and her 400-pound maid, who find refuge in a village full of criminals and ruled by a demented queen.

Olympic Sculpture Park
Friday, August 7
8pm-Midnight

Celebrate summer at the Olympic Sculpture Park with DJs spinning dance music, performances and tours until midnight.
The Seattle Art Museum will keep the Olympic Sculpture Park open until midnight for a special, summer SAM Remix event on Friday, August 7. Attendees can dance to a lineup of internationally renowned DJs and experience the sculptures on view through unconventional and highly opinionated tours of the park.

The sculpture park’s PACCAR Pavilion will showcase internationally renowned electronic music and video projections curated by Seattle’s Decibel Festival. Featured artists include Rena Jones (Portland), Filastine with DJ Collage (Barcelona), and Lusine (Seattle).

SAM Remix’s distinct blend of art, music and performance will extend throughout the entire sculpture park through flashlight art tours, spoken word performances, break dancing and other spontaneous performances. For example, special “My Favorite Things: The Park After Dark” tours led by writers from The Stranger, members of SAM staff, and Remix co-hosts will offer party-goers the chance to experience the park in new and unexpected ways. Friends of the Nib will host a comics drawing rally in the Alvord Art Lab, where visitors can participate alongside a cast of Seattle’s noteworthy comic and graphic artists – an interaction that promises to inspire anyone’s creative side.

LGBT Films at SIFF and a Gay-la

SIFF starts today and there are a bevy of queer films to choose from including the Gay-La that Three Dollar Bill Cinema is co-presenting.

Gay-La
Patrik 1.5
May 28
7:30pm
Egyptian Theatre

What a difference punctuation can make. Because of a stray decimal, the child that a gay couple thinks will be their newly adopted 18-month-old son is actually a troubled, homophobic 15-year-old. Director Ella Lemhagen treats the dramatic subjects of adoption and bigotry with humor, intelligence, and a dash of romance.
Swedish with English subtitles
Complete Gay-la info here

Here is a list of all the LGBT films playing at SIFF. Note: this list also includes short films.
