Every third Wednesday of the month, Three Dollar Bill Cinema @ Central Cinema will present an LGBT audience favorite, including big hits from the Seattle Lesbian & Gay Film Festival, queer classics, and documentaries showing how far we’ve come as a community. This new monthly series kicks off with WIGSTOCK, in honor of Gay Pride Month. Celebrate the 15th anniversary of this upbeat documentary covering every sequined angle of New York City’s annual drag music festival.
Years before RuPaul’s Drag Race, America’s cross dressing contingent gathered for an annual celebration in New York City that filled the streets with wigs, high heels, wigs, performance art, wigs, dancing, and…oh yeah, WIGS! This isn’t Woodstock, this isWIGSTOCK, the yearly celebration organized by the irrepressible founder Lady Bunny (about to grace your television as the Drag Dean of RuPaul’s latest show Drag U). Each year Lady Bunny gathers the finest (and weirdest) drag performers for an unrivaled outdoor celebration.
In the early 90s the cameras were there to capture two summers worth of wigging out, documenting everything from musical performances (Deee-Lite is enchanting as always, and dance diva Crystal Waters almost steals the show with her vivacious ‘tude), behind the scenes antics (lead by our unofficial tour guide Alexis Arquette), and of course the drag divas. RuPaul make a huge splash in the prime of her “Supermodel of the World” glory, the always delightful Lypsinka (still one of the best names ever!) gives a showstopping performance, and you won’t want to miss the completely unsettling Leigh Bowery in one of his final appearances.
