But I’m a Cheerleader
July 21
7:00pm
Three Dollar Bill Cinema @ Central Cinema will present an LGBT audience favorite, including big hits from the Seattle Lesbian & Gay Film Festival, queer classics, and documentaries showing how far we’ve come as a community. In July we get our high kicks on with But I’m a Cheerleader.
Megan is the all-American girl who has it all - she’s a model student, her boyfriend is on the football team and she’s a cheerleader. But she also has pictures of girls in her locker and doesn’t like kissing boys. Her parents decide that she must be a lesbian and send her off to True Directions, a homosexual rehabilitation camp where she’ll be ‘cured’. Megan becomes the perfect resident at camp and can’t wait to be straight…until she’s paired up with rebellious rich girl Graham. Can Megan come to terms with her sexuality, storm the camp and get the girl?
But I’m a Cheerleader is like a cake made from the best recipe. First, pick out an amazing comedic cast (Natasha Lyonne, Clea DuVall, Cathy Moriarty, RuPaul, Mink Stole and Bud Cort), then sprinkle in a bit of John Waters camp and a colorful design style that pops like sprinkles on a cup cake. Then spice it up a little bit by cleverly satirizing everything from the religious right to gender roles. Cook to perfection and you have a taste of indie romance with a big heaping slab of gay frosting on top. In other words: yummy!
