When Mark and Erik, an affluent gay couple in a
committed relationship, place an Internet notice: NYC GAY COUPLE
SEEKING SURROGATE, they get more than they bargain for. We follow
the young pair in their search for a suitable surrogate mother,
and for a baby with whom they share a genetic bond. After their
lawyer calls to say that he’s found an appropriate woman,
they both have fits of nerves along with doubts about fatherhood
and even potency. This too-good-to-be-true person is Wen, a follower
of the Wicca religion who lives in Maine with a husband and a 12-year-old
son. Eventually Mark and Erik’s relationship with Wen goes
beyond the nine months of gestation, and after three years of miscarriages,
they must take the tragedy with humor, as they repeat the comical
and frustrating conception rituals. Ultimately, a documentary with
more drama and love would be difficult to conceive.
