Shocked by the murder of Matthew Shepard, a filmmaker
who grew up in Laramie, Wyoming travels back to explore how the
crime had an impact on her hometown. In LARAMIE INSIDE OUT, director
Beverly Seckinger interviews Fred Phelps (of “God Hates Fags”
fame) during his protest at the criminal trials, as well as Shepard’s
friends from his school’s GLBT association. While examining
the reality of the isolation of gays and lesbians in small towns,
Seckinger also discovers that Shepard’s death inspired many
positive changes in Laramie. One older resident decided to come
out to create awareness in her community, and another started volunteering
with gay youth to atone for not supporting her own son when he was
younger. This poignant documentary exposes the strength and bravery
of activists and ordinary people willing to fight to improve the
lives of queer people in their communities.
Screening with EVERYONE, EVERYWHERE. Acclaimed gay
actor Sir Ian McKellen narrates this documentary short presented
by the International Gay & Lesbian Human Rights Commission (IGLHRC),
which investigates various violations of both legal and human rights
suffered by sexual minorities all over the globe, and IGLHRC’s
ongoing efforts to bring an end to these injustices.
