Over the course of a year, documentary filmmakers
Ruthie Shatz and Adi Barash follow two young men who make their
living in the Garden, a desolate section of Tel Aviv where prostitution
and drug traffic abound. Nino, a 17-year-old Palestinian living
illegally in Israel, and Dudu, an Arab-Israeli struggling with heroin
addiction, give Shatz and Barash tremendous access to the most intimate
aspects of their lives. The daily struggles of these young men are
revealed against the backdrop of Israeli politics and the Israeli-Palestinian
conflict. Both boys fled hostile families as adolescents and long
to regain a sense of home. Nino and Dudu are able to comfort each
other even as they face a choice between imprisonment and the whims
of their clientele. GARDEN does not soften the harsh reality of
its subjects’ lives, but offers a vision of hope for trying
times.
