Farm Family: In Search of Gay Life in Rural America

Saturday, October 16, 12:00pm

If you’ve ever thought that it was tough being gay and “out” in a large urban area, try it in rural America. Tom Murray’s documentary explores the lives of rural gay men who find a sense of community despite often being the only homosexuals for miles around. Raised on a Midwestern dairy farm himself, Murray knows all too well some of the unique challenges these men face. Rural perks may include: not dating until you’re 32; being referred to a mental health specialist when you “out” yourself to your family physician; and having your town try to “zone” you and your partner out of the township for being gay. It just goes to show—even though we’re all a part of the same community, we can still be living in totally different worlds.
