A young African-American art student, Perry (Anthony
Mackie, 8 MILE), struggles with homophobia within the black community,
and simmering racism among his peers and friends, including veiled
comments from his handsome white lover. An encounter with an elderly
homeless man, quite literally waxing poetic, renders Perry and his
pals speechless, and he longs to find out more about this mysterious
stranger. An unusual friendship forms as Perry discovers the man
is actually Bruce Nugent, who once hobnobbed with the likes of Langston
Hughes, Zora Neale Hurston, and Wallace Thurman in the glory days
of the 1920s Harlem Renaissance. Bruce’s tales make history
come alive, opening Perry’s (and viewers’) eyes to issues
of racial and sexual identity, then and now. An impressive first
feature from writer-director Rodney Evans, BROTHER TO BROTHER has
garnered festival awards from L.A. to New York, including Sundance’s
Special Jury Prize for passion in filmmaking.
