| Local playwright, performer, and frequent contributor to the Seattle Lesbian and Gay Film Festival David Schmader returns with his latest triumph: a filmed version of his hit one-man play, STRAIGHT. Filmed during the Portland, Oregon stop on his national tour, STRAIGHT captures Schmader’s nuanced performance from the intimacy of the front row. Schmader takes us (in deep undercover) into the often feared but rarely documented twilight world of conversion therapy, where homosexuals are made "straight." With his trademark humor combined with an honest curiosity about conversion therapy’s claims to success, Schmader ultimately reveals his own personal stories of growing up gay and longing to be straight. Hilarious and insightful first-person encounters with the converted, the recalcitrant, and their various supporters mark his journey through a world where Jesus is Cher and David Schmader is STRAIGHT. STRAIGHT; Jeff Meyers, director; 2002; USA; 100 minutes; video
