| Spotlighting the contemporary struggles of South African AIDS activism, IT’S MY LIFE documents the region’s epidemic through the eyes of one of the country’s leading activists, Zackie Achmat. Chairperson of the Treatment Action Campaign (TAC), Achmat is the most visible South African decrying the government’s failure to provide anti-retrovirals to people with AIDS in public hospitals and clinics. In a country whose president publicly questioned the connection between HIV and AIDS, TAC has fought a long, uphill battle to make expensive drugs accessible to people without means, taking on the government and drug companies in the courts and on the streets. Achmat’s remarkable stand not to take the drugs himself until they are available to all South Africans has been challenged by his concerned colleagues, but has also proven a potent political tool. Indeed, this film is a rallying cry in the battle to recognize the value of human lives over corporate profits. Playing
