ALL IN THE FAMILY: SHORTSGROUP

Sunday, October 20
2:30pm
Harvard Exit

A kick-ass soundtrack featuring Sleater-Kinney, The Gossip, and The Need sets the tone for this locally-grown independent feature set in Olympia, WA. Every Wednesday afternoon for 21 weeks, a gathering of diverse women assemble for "queer friendly" GROUP therapy. Punk amputee, born-again Christian, control freak (played by local rock hero Carrie Brownstein of Sleater-Kinney), sex-rocker, enigma, tramp, bigot, and binger slowly find they have more in common with each other than they care to admit. Director Marilyn Freeman’s first feature, shot with an improvised script, makes ambitious use of six cameras simultaneously to create a split-screen collage, resulting in a grippingly naturalistic social experiment of a film. Testing the limits of female bonding across boundaries of class, religion, age and sexuality, GROUP is an innovative film that’s unforgettably funny at times while offering a riveting look into the American psyche.
