...BUT I WAS A GIRL

...BUT I WAS A GIRL traces the life of Frieda Belinfante, the dashing and daring Dutch symphony conductor who passed as a man to avoid Nazi persecution. Born in 1905 to a Jewish father and a Christian mother, both musically talented, Belinfante became the first woman to conduct her own orchestra. When her flourishing career was cut short by the German occupation of Northern Europe, she joined the Dutch Resistance and was instrumental in helping many Jews escape from the Nazi-controlled Netherlands. She then fled to Switzerland before settling in the United States where she revived her career as a conductor in Hollywood. Weaving interviews, photographs, and historical footage, filmmaker Toni Boumans skillfully recreates the life of a remarkable woman.
