SONS OF HERCULES

Lavish historical spectacles were a cinematic staple long before Russell Crowe sweated and flexed in GLADIATOR. Following Steve Reeves' performance in the 1957 film sensation, HERCULES, costume epics ruled the international box office for the next decade. Unmistakably homoerotic, these films are all about bare skin, blatant bulges, and suggestive poses. Undeniably campy, they're full of crazy visuals, wild dance numbers, and over-the-top female villains. SONS OF HERCULES thoughtfully assesses the genre while celebrating the outlandish kitsch that makes these films so much fun. This special program will include rare clips from more than 70 of these gems, along with commentary by MGM film archivist John Kirk, behind-the-scenes tidbits, and interviews with the films'stars. Join us in paying tribute to this deliriously queer period in the history of cinema.
